Frequently Asked Questions
Does the camera really work?
Yes. Once you've built it, you'll have a real pinhole camera in your hands: open the shutter, expose the film, turn the crank. After about 90 seconds, the Instax photo is developed. All without any power, battery, or app.
Is there film included? Which one do I need?
No, film is not included. That way, you only pay for what you need. The camera uses Fujifilm Instax Mini (ISO 800); Square and Wide formats are not compatible. You can find the 10-pack under “Compatible Accessories” right here on this page.
How hard is it to take pictures?
Honestly: The first few photos rarely turn out right. As a general rule of thumb: 1 to 2 seconds in direct sunlight, 4 to 6 seconds when it's cloudy, and 10 to 15 seconds at dusk. With the exposure chart from our Help Center and a little practice, you'll be able to take atmospheric photos, and Chris from the team is here to help with your first attempts.
Do I need tools or glue?
No. The appropriate PH0 screwdriver is included; no glue is needed. All 65 parts snap together with precision down to the millimeter using snap-fit connections and screws.
How long does it take to set up, and who is it suitable for?
2 to 5 hours at a difficulty level of 3 out of 5: a relaxing afternoon project, best enjoyed with a partner. Recommended for ages 14 and up; younger photography enthusiasts can participate with assistance.
Which set should I choose?
"Just the camera" is all you need for building and taking photos. The wooden tripod (which you can also build yourself) is worth it because the camera needs to be steady for exposures of 4 seconds or longer—such as when it's cloudy or indoors. The red camera strap is for when you're on the go; the complete set is the gift set.
Function & Mechanics in Detail
You have 8,000 photos on your phone. Which ones can you still remember?
Using 65 laser-cut wooden pieces, you’ll build an instant camera that actually works. No app, no battery, no filter. Just you, the subject, and an Instax photo that you’ll be holding in your hands 90 seconds later. It’s the only camera you’ve ever built yourself—and you can tell that from every single photo.
Each part snaps into the next with millimeter precision, without any glue. The included PH0 screwdriver and illustrated instructions are provided. The camera will be ready in 2 to 5 hours, and you’ll be able to take photos with it for years to come.
Here's how it works
- Pinhole camera principle: no lens, just a 0.3-mm hole—the same optical system used in the world’s first photographs
- Manual exposure: Open the shutter, count, close—1 to 2 seconds in sunlight, 4 to 6 seconds when it's cloudy, 10 to 15 seconds at dusk
- Hand-crank development: turn the crank, wait 90 seconds, and you're done—no electricity required
- Film: Fujifilm Instax Mini (ISO 800). Not included—you only order what you need. Add a 10-pack here
Which set is right for you?
- Just the Camera: The kit includes a screwdriver and instructions—everything you need to build it and take photos
- Camera + Tripod: This wooden tripod (which you can also build yourself) keeps the camera steady for exposures of 4 seconds or longer—for sharp photos when it's cloudy or indoors
- Camera + Tripod + Camera Strap: With a red strap for on the go—the complete gift set
To be honest
The first two or three photos rarely turn out right. Getting the exposure right with a pinhole camera takes a bit of a feel for it, and that’s exactly what makes it so appealing: when a photo turns out right, it’s yours. Our exposure chart in the Help Center will get you up to speed quickly, and Chris from our team is available to help with your first attempts via email or phone.
