Further information
You have 8,000 photos on your phone. Which ones can you still remember?
Using 65 laser-cut wooden pieces, you’ll build an instant camera that actually works. No app, no battery, no filter. Just you, the subject, and an Instax photo that you’ll be holding in your hands 90 seconds later. It’s the only camera you’ve ever built yourself—and you can tell that from every single photo.
Each part snaps into the next with millimeter precision, without any glue. The included PH0 screwdriver and illustrated instructions are provided. The camera will be ready in 2 to 5 hours, and you’ll be able to take photos with it for years to come.
Here's how it works
- Pinhole camera principle: no lens, just a 0.3-mm hole—the same optical system used in the world’s first photographs
- Manual exposure: Open the shutter, count, close—1 to 2 seconds in sunlight, 4 to 6 seconds when it's cloudy, 10 to 15 seconds at dusk
- Hand-crank development: turn the crank, wait 90 seconds, and you're done—no electricity required
- Film: Fujifilm Instax Mini (ISO 800). Not included—you only order what you need. Add a 10-pack here
Which set is right for you?
- Just the Camera: The kit includes a screwdriver and instructions—everything you need to build it and take photos
- Camera + Tripod: This wooden tripod (which you can also build yourself) keeps the camera steady for exposures of 4 seconds or longer—for sharp photos when it's cloudy or indoors
- Camera + Tripod + Camera Strap: With a red strap for on the go—the complete gift set
To be honest
The first two or three photos rarely turn out right. Getting the exposure right with a pinhole camera takes a bit of a feel for it, and that’s exactly what makes it so appealing: when a photo turns out right, it’s yours. Our exposure chart in the Help Center will get you up to speed quickly, and Chris from our team is available to help with your first attempts via email or phone.
